Newt Gingrich wrote in "Real Change: From the World That Fails to the World That Works" that we are in World War 3. Newt further states that anyone who believes differently is just totally ignoring all of the signs and words of our enemies, Fascist Islamic Extremists.

The most recent battle broke out in Mumbai India. Islamic terrorists killed 100 individuals, targeting British and American citizens. The English Register noted

The gunmen specifically targeted Americans and Britons at the hotels and the restaurant, Leopold's. An unknown number of people were being held hostage as police raided the two hotels, the Taj and the Oberio. At least six of the gunmen have been killed since the attacks began at about 9:30 local time on Wednesday.

A Muslim terrorist group called Deccan Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

To win this world, the free west must recognize that we are in a war and apply resources not a appease but to kill and defeat the enemy. If Fascist Islamic terrorist get nuclear or biological, the free world will lose a city and millions of people.

American, wake up to the realities. Fight to win, or be prepared to lose your freedoms and way of life. Remember, Fascist Islamic terrorist don't want to co-exist with us, they want to destroy us.

Governor Granholm said "in five years, you'll be blown away," Michigan families are being blown away - 8.5 percent - highest rate in 16 years. 23,000 more people have lost their jobs since October when Granholm and the Democrats pushed through the largest tax increase in state history.

The federal government added insult to injury by passing new minimum wage requirements. Now, high schoolers out on summer vacation can't get jobs because the employers are hiring less because of the new minimum wage law.

Obama is promising more of the same for America. America cannot survive Democratic policies of increased taxes and spending.

Michigan - wake up and realize that Michigan is a preview of national Democratic policies. Want more unemployment? What higher prices for fuel? If you do, just elect the Democratic candidates and you will get it all... higher prices, higher taxes, and unemployment.

Gore's Home Still Guzzling Energy

In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former vice president’s home energy use surged more than 10 percent, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, "An Inconvenient Truth," a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service.

I am going to talk of controversial things. I make no apology for this.

It's time we asked ourselves if we still know the freedoms intended for us by the Founding Fathers. James Madison said, "We base all our experiments on the capacity of mankind for self government."

This idea -- that government was beholden to the people, that it had no other source of power -- is still the newest, most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man. This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.

You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream--the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order -- or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path. Plutarch warned, "The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits."

The Founding Fathers knew a government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. So we have come to a time for choosing.

Public servants say, always with the best of intentions, "What greater service we could render if only we had a little more money and a little more power." But the truth is that outside of its legitimate function, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector.

Yet any time you and I question the schemes of the do-gooders, we're denounced as being opposed to their humanitarian goals. It seems impossible to legitimately debate their solutions with the assumption that all of us share the desire to help the less fortunate. They tell us we're always "against," never "for" anything.

We are for a provision that destitution should not follow unemployment by reason of old age, and to that end we have accepted Social Security as a step toward meeting the problem. However, we are against those entrusted with this program when they practice deception regarding its fiscal shortcomings, when they charge that any criticism of the program means that we want to end payments....

We are for aiding our allies by sharing our material blessings with nations which share our fundamental beliefs, but we are against doling out money government to government, creating bureaucracy, if not socialism, all over the world.

We need true tax reform that will at least make a start toward restoring for our children the American Dream that wealth is denied to no one, that each individual has the right to fly as high as his strength and ability will take him.... But we cannot have such reform while our tax policy is engineered by people who view the tax as a means of achieving changes in our social structure....

Have we the courage and the will to face up to the immorality and discrimination of the progressive tax, and demand a return to traditional proportionate taxation? . . . Today in our country the tax collector's share is 37 cents of every dollar earned. Freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp.

Are you willing to spend time studying the issues, making yourself aware, and then conveying that information to family and friends? Will you resist the temptation to get a government handout for your community? Realize that the doctor's fight against socialized medicine is your fight. We can't socialize the doctors without socializing the patients. Recognize that government invasion of public power is eventually an assault upon your own business. If some among you fear taking a stand because you are afraid of reprisals from customers, clients, or even government, recognize that you are just feeding the crocodile hoping he'll eat you last.

If all of this seems like a great deal of trouble, think what's at stake. We are faced with the most evil enemy mankind has known in his long climb from the swamp to the stars. There can be no security anywhere in the free world if there is no fiscal and economic stability within the United States. Those who ask us to trade our freedom for the soup kitchen of the welfare state are architects of a policy of accommodation.

They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right. Winston Churchill said that "the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits--not animals." And he said, "There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty."

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.

I BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING IS A "MUST READ."

A man whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War Two owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.

"Very few people were true Nazis "he said," but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration
camp and the Allies destroyed my factories."

We are told again and again by "experts" and "talking heads" that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majorit y of Muslims just want to live in peace.

Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the specter of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam. The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history.

It is the fanatics who march.
It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide.
It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal
groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire
continent in an Islamic wave.
It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor kill.
It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque.
It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of
rape victims and homosexuals.
The hard quantifiable fact is that the "peaceful majority" the
"silent majority" is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia comprised Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China's huge population, it was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War 2 was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel and bayonet.

And, who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were "peace loving"?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awake one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up
until it was too late.

As for us who watch it all unfold; we must pay attention to the only
group that counts; the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Representative Tom Delay's Closing Remarks

The Democratic National Party can't win at the polls. Their message doesn't sell. They function by being obstructionist. As yesterday's vote in the US Senate indicates, Democrats and 2 Republicans scuttled the cloture vote on the Death Tax. The public overwhelmingly wanted to end the unfair death tax. The Democrats prevented an up or down vote on it.

Yesterday, Rep Tom Delay gaving his final remarks as a congressman. He reminds us why we have partisanship. He is a great Congressman and I wish him well. His speech is below:

The point is, we disagree. On first principles, Mr. Speaker, we disagree. And so we debate, often loudly, and often in vain, to convince our opponents and the American people of our point of view.

We debate here on the House floor, we debate in committees, we debate on television and on radio and on the Internet and in the newspapers and then every two years, we have a huge debate. And then in November, we see who won. That is not rancor, that is democracy.

You show me a nation without partisanship, and I'll show you a tyranny. For all its faults, it is partisanship, based on core principles, that clarifies our debates, that prevents one party from straying too far from the mainstream, and that constantly refreshes our politics with new ideas and new leaders.

Indeed, whatever role partisanship may have played in my own retirement today or in the unfriendliness heaped upon other leaders in other times, Republican or Democrat, however unjust, all we can say is that partisanship is the worst means of settling fundamental political differences -- except for all the others.

Now, politics demands compromise. And Mr. Speaker, and even the most partisan among us have to understand that, but we must never forget that compromise and bipartisanship are means, not ends, and are properly employed only in the service of higher principles.

DELAY: It is not the principled partisan, however obnoxious he may seem to his opponents, who degrades our public debate, but the preening, self-styled statesman who elevates compromise to a first principle .

For the true statesman, Mr. Speaker, we are not defined by what they compromise, but by what they don't.

During the Alito hearings, Moonbat Kennedy (aka Senator Kennedy), grilled over and over Alito's membership in Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP), a group against co-education at Princeton.

Moonbat Kennedy never once spoke about his continued membership in the OWL Club, a "men only club". Well now when confronted about this, Kennedy admitted two things. First, yes he was a member of the OWL Club, and yes he continued to pay membership fees. He also admitted that he would not pass the Judicial committee's muster to be a Supreme Court Justice. But he did say he will "quit right now".

Finally... Finally a word of truth from Senator Kennedy. When I suggested he celebrate with a drink, he stated "already had one, a couple, oh I don't know, a few."

An Appeal from Center-Right Bloggers

We are bloggers with boatloads of opinions, and none of us come close to agreeing with any other one of us all of the time. But we do agree on this: The new leadership in the House of Representatives needs to be thoroughly and transparently free of the taint of the Jack Abramoff scandals, and beyond that, of undue influence of K Street.

We are not naive about lobbying, and we know it can and has in fact advanced crucial issues and has often served to inform rather than simply influence Members.

But we are certain that the public is disgusted with excess and with privilege. We hope the Hastert-Dreier effort leads to sweeping reforms including the end of subsidized travel and other obvious influence operations. Just as importantly, we call for major changes to increase openness, transparency and accountability in Congressional operations and in the appropriations process.

As for the Republican leadership elections, we hope to see more candidates who will support these goals, and we therefore welcome the entry of Congressman John Shadegg to the race for Majority Leader. We hope every Congressman who is committed to ethical and transparent conduct supports a reform agenda and a reform candidate. And we hope all would-be members of the leadership make themselves available to new media to answer questions now and on a regular basis in the future.

Senator Ted Kennedy grilled US Supreme Court candidate Samuel Alito about membership in the Concerned Alumni of Princeton (CAP). He asked over and over for Alito to explain his membership in this "exclusive all male" club. Senator Kennedy all the while withholding that he is a member of the Harvard Men's Only Club OWL.

Bobby Eberle of the Loft wrote:

"If there is one thing to be learned from the confirmation hearings for Judge Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court, it's that liberal Democrats will waste no opportunity to grandstand for their far left-wing even if that means being misleading with the facts, unprofessional with the questioning, and hypocritical with the insinuations. Case in point is liberal moonbat Ted Kennedy who blasted Judge Alito for being a member of an "exclusive" club of Princeton alumni without mentioning that he is a member of an "exclusive" all-male Harvard club.

However, this was not good enough for Kennedy who spent the bulk of his time on Wednesday hammering Alito about his membership in the group. What does this all mean? It means that the liberal left is morally bankrupt and without a clue how to change for the better. Senator Kennedy would not qualify for the Supreme Court as he is an alcoholic whose driving drunk has killed people.

To the United States Senate, stop the delay and vote to confirm a extremely well qualified canditate in Samuel Alito.

DNC Howard Dean Stupid or Just a Liar?

I can't believe the Democratic National Party Chairman, Howard Dean, still holds that post! On Sunday, Howard Dean while being interviewed by CNN's Wolf Blitzer, stated:

"There are no Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff, not one, not one single Democrat. Every person named in this scandal is a Republican. Every person under investigation is a Republican. Every person indicted is a Republican.

Dean continued: "This is a Republican finance scandal. There is no evidence that Jack Abramoff ever gave any Democrat any money. And we've looked through all of those FEC reports to make sure that's true."

Does Howard Dean live in a cave and only come out to give stupid interviews? Last week, Sen. Clinton's office announced that she would be donating $2,000 of her Abramoff jackpot to charity. The Republican National Committee says she took a total of $12,900 in Abramoff-linked cash.

Other Democrats who have pledged to return tainted donations include Sens. Tim Johnson and Barbara Mikulski - as well as leading House Democrat Charles Rangel.

Abramoff and Republican Corruption?

You can't read the paper or listen to news without hearing about the Abramoff scandal and Republican corruption.

While the MSM continue to demonize the entire Republican Party as corrupt in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal, it has been learned that Demo poster child Hillary Clinton has been caught up in her own little corruption imbroglio. During the Clinton 2000 New York Senate race, a fundraising group under reported campaign contributions and has agreed to pay a $35,000 fine for deliberately underreporting the cost of a star-studded Hollywood gala meant to raise money for Clinton. The crooked accounting attempted to hide over $700,000, but have you seen this in the news or heard about it in the MSM? No...!

Or how about 40 of the 45 Democratic Senators have also received money from Jack Abramoff? Haven't heard anyone in the MSM saying that the Democrats are corrupt. Just another obvious example of the LEFT leaning... excuse me... falling liberal press and their ongoing practice of writing propraganda and not reporting the news.

Louis Farrakhan Named 'Person of the Year'

The Black Entertainment Television network recently named Louis Farrkhan their "Person of the Year".

"An overwhelming percentage of our users agreed that Minister Farrakhan made the most positive impact on the black community over the past year," BET.com vice president Retha Hill told FinalCall.com, Farrakhan's own web site...

Loius Farrakhan said "During his Millions More March address, Farrakhan urged African-Americans to bring a class action suit for "criminal neglect" against the U.S. on behalf of Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans and demanded that America "acknowledge her wickedness to the indigenous peoples of this hemisphere."

For weeks before the march, the controversial minister touted a theory that the Bush administration had blown up the levees in New Orleans. Farrakhan said he came to that conclusion after a private meeting with Mayor Ray Nagin, who told him there was a 25-foot crater beneath the levees.

Couldn't BET pick someone more credible that Farrakhan? Here is a man that has existed only to divide America with his firebrand speech. It is a sad day in America when BET pollsters cannot find a better candidate.

Congressional Black Caucus Hypocrisy

The Congressional Black Caucus in August chastised President Bush for the "slow" response of the federal government aid to the Katrina victims. The Black Caucus also stated that the President's response was race related in a September 2 news conference.

Well, the Congressional Black Caucus has been sitting on $700,000 collected for the victims of Katrina.

U.S. Rep. Carolyn C. Kilpatrick (D-Mich.), also present at the Congressional Black CaucusÂ Sept. 2 news conference, declared that she was "ashamed of America."

I'm ashamed of our government. We don't want another Iraq, where the money just goes off somewhere. This is real human need. And I'm outraged by the lack of response from our federal government," Kilpatrick said.

Well, what is the Congressional Black Caucus doing with their money, collected for the victims of Katrina?

We are collecting all the way up through the very end of the year and then our board has set aside a committee who is going to administer the funds, Patty Rice, spokeswoman for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), told Cybercast News Service on Wednesday.

Talk about a slow reponse! Maybe Congress Woman Kilpatrick should be ashamed of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF).

What we need is a little less politicizing of disasters such as Katrina, and a little more energy spent on helping those in needs. To the CBCF, get busy and start distributing your money, even at this late date... You seem so insensitive to the real needs of citizens of New Orleans and the surrounding area.

Michael Moore Denies He Owned Halliburton

Bush-bashing filmmaker Michael Moore is denying he ever owned stock in Halliburton Energy Services Company, the oil equipment giant once run by Vice President Dick Cheney that has become an anethma to left-wingers.

Speaking last week at the first annual Paul Wellstone Memorial Dinner in Washington, D.C., Moore claimed that the Halliburton allegation in Peter Schweizer's blocbuster new book "Do As I Say, [Not As I Do]," is "crazy."

Michael Moore own Halliburton stock?" the anti-corporate lefty asked the crowd. "See, that's like a great comedy line. I know it's not true - I mean, I've never owned a share of stock in my life."

Moore protested: "Anybody who knows me knows that, you know - who's gonna believe that? Just crazy people are going to believe it - crazy people who tune into the Fox News Channel."

And maybe crazy people who can read with their own eyes the tax return for Mr. Moore's very own foundation - as reprinted in Schweizer's book.

The bestselling author reports: "Publicly, Moore claims that he doesn't invest in the stock market out of moral principle. Privately, he tells the IRS something completely different."

Schweizer explains how the widely acclaimed anti-corporatist set up a private foundation after his first major film, "Roger & Me," started making serious money.

In 1999, "the year Moore claimed in 'Stupid White Men' that he didn't own any stock, he reported to the IRS that his foundation had more than $280,000 in corporate stock and close to $100,000 in corporate bonds."

"And in perhaps the ultimate irony," notes Schweizer, "he also has owned shares in Halliburton. According to IRS filings, Moore sold Halliburton for a 15 percent profit and bought shares in Noble, Ford, General Electric" and other allegedly evil corporations.

Moore is currently working on a documentary attacking big pharmaceuticals. But Schweizer discovered that Moore's foundation holdings have "included such evil pharmaceutical and medical companies as Pfizer, Merck, Genzyme, Elan PLC, Eli Lilly, Becton Dickinson and Boston Scientific."

Schweizer continues: "Moore's supposedly nonexistent portfolio also includes big bad energy giants like Sunoco, Noble Energy, Schlumberger, Williams Companies, Transocean Sedco Forex and Anadarko, all firms that 'deplete irreplaceable fossil fuels in the name of profit' as he put it in 'Dude, Where's My Country?'

"Also on Moore's investment menu: defense contractors Honeywell, Boeing and Loral."

Does Moore share the stock proceeds of his "foundation" with charitable causes, you might ask?

Schweizer found that "for a man who by 2002 had a net worth in eight figures, he gave away a modest $36,000 through the foundation, much of it to his friends in the film business or tony cultural organizations that later provided him with venues to promote his books and film."

Moore's hypocrisy doesn't end with his financial holdings.

He has criticized the journalism industry and Hollywood for their lack of African-Americans in prominent positions, and in 1998 he said he personally wanted to hire minorities "who come from the working class."

In "Stupid White Men," he proclaimed his plans to "hire only black people."

But when Schweizer checked the senior credits for Moore's latest film "Fahrenheit 911," he found that of the movie's 14 producers, three editors, production manager and production coordinator, all 19 were white. So were all three cameramen and the two people who did the original music.

On "Bowling for Columbine," 13 of the 14 producers were white, as were the two executives in charge of production, the cameramen, the film editor and the music composer.

His show "TV Nation" had 13 producers, four film editors and 10 writers - but not a single African-American among them.

And as for Moore's insistence on portraying himself as "working class" and an "average Joe," Schweizer recounts this anecdote: "When Moore flew to London to visit people at the BBC or promote a film, he took the Concorde and stayed at the Ritz. But he also allegedly booked a room at a cheap hotel down the street where he could meet with journalists and pose as a ?man of humble circumstances.'"

Michael Moore, that's not "crazy" -- that's hypocrisy with a capital H!

� To hint that ID is using “fake research” is dishonest. The truth is that a growing number of actual scientists show interest in ID. This includes ID-ers problems with Darwinian macroevolution.
� “Fake research” has been used by Darwinists. See, e.g., Jonathan Wells’ Icons of Evolution.
� “Science” and “scientific truth” and “peer review” and “the self-policing nature of science” present actual scientists in universities as pure Cartesian intellects devoid of “politics.” Politics has long been involved in Neo-Darwinist promotion. Not all Neo-Darwinians have engaged in it. Just as not all ID-ers engage in it. But it seems to be a quite human thing.

Iraq veteran Paul Hacket is running for elective office as a democrat. But is he? A John Kerry Jr? Just another candidate using another war experience to his advantage, all the while stating he is against it. He can't run as a democrat and win! He can't win and say "I am going to raise your taxes", or "I want a bigger federal government", or "I am against the war". That last one is laughable. Paul Hacket has a TV advertisement stating that he supports the President and the Iraq war, but later states he is running because he is against it. What is it? Are you for it or against it?

It doesn't matter. He won't run on the truth, only what might get him elected (a stealth Democrat).

Today's axiom: Democrats can't win when they tell what they really believe and will do when and if elected.

Devious? Senator Kennedy

Well look who's calling the kettle black... ol' "we'll cross that bridge when it comes up" Kennedy. Who by the shear nature of money and his name, avoided manslaugher charges when he drove off the bridge while drunk and drowned his date in his car.

How Many Times Do They Lie...

How many times does the liberal left have to lie before the public starts believing the statement as true? Early studies on some topics indicate that all it takes is once if the topics deal with Christian churches, President Bush, or constructionist judge appointees. As an example... the US Senate rules pertaining to filibuster. The democrats started filibustering conservative judical appointees because they did not want conservative judges, period.

I say to Senator Frist, "damn the nuclear option" and vote to remove the filibuster from the judicial advise and consent role of the Senate.

A brief on the Senate Filibuster

Filibuster and Cloture

Using the filibuster to delay debate or block legislation has a long history. In the United States, the term filibuster -- from a Dutch word meaning "pirate" -- became popular in the 1850s when it was applied to efforts to hold the Senate floor in order to prevent action on a bill.

In the early years of Congress, representatives as well as senators could use the filibuster technique. As the House grew in numbers, however, it was necessary to revise House rules to limit debate. In the smaller Senate, unlimited debate continued since senators believed any member should have the right to speak as long as necessary.

In 1841, when the Democratic minority hoped to block a bank bill promoted by Henry Clay, Clay threatened to change Senate rules to allow the majority to close debate. Thomas Hart Benton angrily rebuked his colleague, accusing Clay of trying to stifle the Senate's right to unlimited debate. Unlimited debate remained in place in the Senate until 1917. At that time, at the suggestion of President Woodrow Wilson, the Senate adopted a rule (Rule 22) that allowed the Senate to end a debate with a two-thirds majority vote -- a tactic known as "cloture."

The new Senate rule was put to the test in 1919, when the Senate invoked cloture to end a filibuster against the Treaty of Versailles. Despite the new cloture rule, however, filibusters continued to be an effective means to block legislation, due in part to the fact that a two-thirds majority vote is difficult to obtain. Over the next several decades, the Senate tried numerous times to evoke cloture, but failed to gain the necessary two-thirds vote. Filibusters were particularly useful to southern senators blocking civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1975, the Senate reduced the number of votes required for cloture from two-thirds (67) to three-fifths (60) of the 100-member Senate.

Many Americans are familiar with the hours-long filibuster of Senator Jefferson Smith in Frank Capra's film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, but there have been some famous filibusters in the real-life Senate as well. During the 1930s, Senator Huey P. Long effectively used the filibuster against bills that he thought favored the rich over the poor. The Louisiana senator frustrated his colleagues while entertaining spectators with his recitations of Shakespeare and his reading of recipes for "pot-likkers." Long once held the Senate floor for fifteen hours. The record for the longest individual speech goes to South Carolina's J. Strom Thurmond who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
